STC/FTC Meeting: Preparing for Your Career in Tech Comm

You’re invited to join us on February 26th for our annual STC/FTC meeting. The event’s topic will be Preparing for Your Career in Tech Comm. Attendance is free! Networking starts at 6:30pm and at 7:00pm the presentations will begin. At 8:00pm there will be a Q&A session.

A panel of professional technical communicators will be joining us to give presentations on career prep, answer your questions, network, and more. Some of them will be UCF English/Technical Communication majors who graduated and are now working in the field.

Diane Hogan

Technical Communications Specialist at ReDactions

Diane is a writer, designer, and instructor with over 40 years in the software industry. Her career spans software development, information security, instructional design, content development, instructor-led training, and technical writing. During the first few months of her doctoral journey, a technical writing opportunity came along, and she thought, why not? Since the onset of her career, she had worked with technical information, and developing content for users just seemed right. The doctoral experience and her new direction were rewarding and further solidified her belief that documentation is a learning medium that can transform technology into useful and practical information.

Barrie Byron

Senior Technical Content Writer – Instabase

Barrie Byron is a silver-lining specialist with more than 20 years of experience in planning, designing, developing, delivering, and maintaining information products for a variety of audiences and purposes. A knowledge-sharing partner with engineering, product, and support teams, she is a master of resilience and leader of change management. A remote worker in various employee and contractor roles since 2008, she works in her home office in Boynton Beach, Florida. Lori Meyer

Lori Meyer is a technical communicator with more than 25 years of experience designing, writing, and editing software documentation and online user assistance. She started her career as a technical editor and is currently the lead writer at a cybersecurity firm in northern California. She has an MS degree in instructional technology.

Lori is a member and volunteer for several STC communities. She currently serves as president of the Rochester Chapter, secretary of the Florida Chapter, membership manager of the Instructional Design and Learning Community of Practice, and director at large for the Washington DC-Baltimore and Philadelphia Metro chapters, as well as an ad-hoc member of the STC Community Affairs Committee. In 2015, Lori was named an STC Fellow.

Rachel Eichen

Curriculum Developer  – Aristocrat

Rachel Eichen has over 18 years of training and writing experience in a variety of industries including casinos, financial institutions, restaurants, hospitals, and libraries. She even taught computer classes on a cruise ship! She is a UCF Alumni and former FTC president. Rachel holds a Master’s degree in Library & Information Science and a bachelor’s degree in Technical Writing. Her hobbies include walking, tea, and decorative planning. She currently lives outside of Las Vegas.

Melissa Rios

Manager, Integrated Product SupportL3Harris Technologies

 

Melissa Rios graduated from UCF with a BA in Technical Communications in 1995. She has over 25 years’ experience in the Technical Writing field with most of that time in the defense industry. She has worked for L3Harris Technologies for a total of 19 years.

She is currently working on a Master of Business Management, Project Management from Embry-Riddle.
