Design of Communication Conference from SIGDOC

Design of Communication Conference from SIGDOC

By Dr. Sonia Stephens

UCF is bringing a communication design conference to Orlando from October 26-28, 2023, and we’d like to invite Florida STC members to participate. ACM SIGDOC (Association of Computing Machinery–Special Interest Group in the Design of Communication) is a professional organization that focuses on research and practice of communication design. Its membership includes academics, practitioners, and teachers in various fields, including technical communication, information architecture, and user-centered design.

We’d like to invite Florida practitioners and researchers in related fields to attend the conference and also consider submitting a proposal to present a talk or poster about your work. Since SIGDOC wants to encourage practitioners to join the conference, one of the presentation categories, “Industry Insight” presentations, is geared towards sharing on-the-ground experiences and lessons learned related to communication design. Previous Industry Insights presentations have focused on practitioner career paths, novel uses of tools or methods, and case studies of web accessibility or international communication.

Some of the types of questions you might consider presenting are:

  • What types of technologies or methods do practitioners see as valuable in the workplace?
  • What lessons have you learned from novel communication projects that might be helpful for others?
  • What best practices for project workflow have you developed from workplace experience?

Visit the SIGDOC 2023 conference website for more information. The deadline for presentation submissions is midnight, March 27. We also have a student research competition for undergraduate or graduate students–details are on the conference website.
